When the Pixies released Surfer Rosa in 1988 I instantly became a fan. How could an 18 year-old kid not love a record of incredible songs with a beautiful topless flamenco dancer on the album cover? Surfer Rosa was a double threat! That album spent many weeks on my turntable and that record jacket spent even more time in my bathroom. And thank god this was a time just before CDs took hold of the market, how could I masturbate to a tiny photo on a CD cover?
The cover is just sexy! Obviously the beautiful naked breasts were the focus of my attention but the whole scene is erotic in a sort of dark and dirty way. The woman on the cover, known only as “a friend of a friend,” personified sexuality for me. She was mysteriously confident but vulnerable and the whole scene seemed forbidden and foreign, which was pretty much what sex was to me at age 18.
The photograph was the idea of Black Francis and was taken by Simon Larbalestier who photographed most, if not all, of the Pixies album art.
The big question is who is this woman and where is she now? Sadly I can not find an answer to that question but not for a lack of trying.
